North Carolina State University, North Carolina Agricultural Research Service Annual Reports 1879-1994

The annual reports of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service include annual and biennial reports from the Agricultural Research Service (many under its former designation of the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station), and reports documenting "Accomplishements in Tobacco Research in North Carolina." Materials range in date from 1879 to 1994. The North Carolina Agricultural Research Service began as the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station in 1877. The Experiment Station, the second of its kind in the United States, was established to conduct tests on commercial fertilizers and other agricultural products, as well as to perform experimental research on agricultural nutrition and growth. As such, the Experiment Station worked closely with the North Carolia Department of Agriculture. In 1979, the Agricultural Experiment Station was renamed the Agricultural Research Service.

The North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station was created in 1877, and transferred from the state to North Carolina State University in 1889. The Station was jointly run by the two groups and became a source of contention between the State Department of Agriculture and the University through the early part of the twentieth century.
